Cartamundi's new range of playing cards

New lifestyle-branded decks bring a stylish and original approach to playing card design

Cartamundi, one of the world’s market leaders in playing cards and card games, has announced the arrival of Pitch Black, Death Poker and Calavera, its newest and most striking approach to designs for playing cards aimed at an older audience. The Calavera deck references the vibrant colours and smiling skulls made from sugar or clay used in the Mexican celebration of the Day of the Dead, while Pitch Black goes for a minimalist approach, one that combines a deep black background with thin lines and geometrical shapes in either white or red. Both decks are supported by and complement the Death Poker range, which uses ornate illustrations of skulls and jewels to striking effect.

These sophisticated and distinctive new decks are part of a lifestyle-branded selection of cards that is aimed at the teenage and young adult market. They retail at £3.99.

Pitch Black attracted enormous interest at the Nuremberg Toy Fair, where designer Jirs Huygen, whose background includes acclaimed works of graffiti art, was delighted by the very positive reactions to his creation.

Trudi Bishop, Head of Marketing and Licensing, Cartamundi Group, said: “As an acknowledged leader in playing card design we are thrilled to be blazing a new trail with the striking Pitch Black, Death Poker and Calavera decks, all of which are stylish and original. In fact they are as much design classics as they are very modern decks of cards.
