Gibsons support Dementia Week

The independent jigsaw puzzle and board games company have teamed up with All Jigsaw Puzzles to offer a half price promotion to support the initiative and encourage puzzling

In the UK, one person develops dementia every three minutes. Yet too many people living with dementia face the condition alone and are excluded from society. But Alzheimer’s Society is leading the movement for change and are determined to create a dementia-friendly UK where people with dementia are included and supported to live the lives they want. Dementia Action Week (21-25th May 2018) is the chance to unite and take action on dementia, whether that’s spending time with a loved one who is living with the disease or campaigning to raise awareness.

Completing a jigsaw puzzle not only reduces the risk of developing dementia but is also beneficial for those who have already been diagnosed with the condition. The charity, Unforgettable Foundation, report that in a Cochrane Review of different studies, scientists looked at 718 men and women with mild to moderate Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia. The results revealed that mental stimulation such as completing a jigsaw, improved scores on memory and thinking tests, which is the equivalent to a 6-9 month delay in worsening of symptoms. Some of the studies also found that those with living with dementia who engaged in such activities had increased feelings of well-being and a better quality of life, including improved communication and interactions with those around them.

To support Dementia Action Week and encourage jigsaw puzzling among those living with or without dementia, Gibsons, the independent jigsaw puzzle and board games company, have teamed up with All Jigsaw Puzzles to offer a half price promotion. Not only do customers get Linda Jane Smith’s 500-piece puzzle, Purrfect Chocolate, for half price when any Gibsons puzzle is ordered, Gibsons are also donating 50p to The Alzheimer’s Society for every copy of Purrfect Chocolate sold.

Jane Knight, Customer Relationship Manager and trained Dementia Champion at Kew House Care Home in Wimbledon, went to Gibsons to deliver a Dementia Friends session as part of the Alzheimer’s Society’s initiative to create a dementia friendly UK. She said: 'As one in fourteen people over the age of 65 develop dementia, it is so important to educate those around us about the condition and transform the way people think about dementia.

'Each fun and informative session, which is taught in partnership with the Alzheimer’s Society, takes an hour and explores what it is like to live with dementia, how you can help someone with dementia live a fulfilled life and the small things you can do to make a difference.'
