Help clear up after Desmond

Charity urge retailers to assist colleagues affected by storm flooding and damage.

The UK’S leading retail charity have urged retailers to support their fellow workers who have been affected by the havoc and flooding caused by Storm Desmond.

As a major incident was declared thousands in Cumbria and Lancashire have seen their homes and businesses damaged, more than 2,000 properties are still to have power restored today (Tuesday, December 8) following the deluge and high winds over the weekend, and many have been displaced from their homes.

RetailTrust have pledged to provide emotional support with free counselling services, legal and financial support to those affected, but do require donations cover the costs.

Founded in 1832 and with the Queen as their patron, the charity have asked retailers to support their colleagues by holding staff fundraising events and donating to the RetailTrust Cumbria And Lancashire Fund For Affected Retail Families JustGiving page.

They are also urging retailers in the north west to direct affected staff to the website or to call the free helpline on 0808 801 0808 for assistance.

A RetailTrust spokesman said they “offer hardship grants to those in need, providing short-term financial assistance that could prove to be a lifeline at this time of year where workers can apply online”.

Alongside financial support, RetailTrust offer free advice to those affected, from help with applying for an insurance claim to legal advice on tenants’ rights and obligations in a disaster situation.
