Major retailers’ websites crash on Black Friday

In a bid to get a bargain shoppers have crashed the websites of major retailers and big names like Boots, Argos, Game, Currys and Tesco Direct experienced technical difficulties this morning.

Desperate shoppers tried to snag a bargain on items from flat screen TVs, coffee machines and toys to homeware, furnishings and clothing.

Several websites crashed just after 12am as online buyers desperately tried to take advantage of the sales. Many had not recovered by 8.30am.

Shoppers who attempted to visit Currys' website were told 'huge demand has meant we need to place you in a short queue' - with reports of some customers waiting for up to an hour to get through to the deals page. It was still displaying the same message to customers at 8.30am, with warnings of 'Leave the queue, lose your place' displayed on the homepage.

Argos' website also remains down, with a message to shoppers saying: 'We're currently experiencing a very high volume of visitors to our website.' While it returned to normal function in the early hours, it appeared to have crashed again by 7.15am as demand soared once again.

Both Boots and Game struggled with their websites overnight, but both now appear to be functioning.
