Tableware Awards: And the winners are…

At Sunday night’s dazzling Tableware International Awards of Excellence 2019, which took place at Ambiente in Frankfurt, 17 tabletop companies and one individual were announced as winners

On Sunday, February 10, Lema Publishing's global industry publication Tableware International held its the second edition of its Awards - the Tableware International Awards of Excellence 2019 - at Messe Frankfurt.

The dazzling awards ceremony, which took place in Hall 4.2, during Ambiente 2019, and which attracted more than 250 guests - including retailers, tabletop company directors and tableware designers from all over the world - was held to both celebrate the tabletop industry and to announce the final winners in the Tableware International Awards of Excellence 2019.

Some 51 finalists, the top three in each of the 17 categories - selected by Tableware International's prestigious panel of 26 global Awards judges - were acknowledged during the awards, before the final 17 winners were revealed.

"We received an incredible 274 entries this year from 148 different brands, that’s up from 218 entries from 94 brands in 2018,” says editor Kate Birch. “And while many of the brands who participated in the first edition returned this year with new collections, such as Rosenthal, Lenox, Orrefors, Nikko, Alessi and Denby, there were many new brands who made their Tableware Awards debut, including Riecel, Wedgwood, ASA, Revol, Richard Ginori and Moser, among others.

“We couldn’t have been more delighted with the entries this year, not just in numbers, but in the quality of the brands that chose to participate. Such an enthusiastic response is testament both to the innovation and creativity of the tableware industry and to the credibility of Tableware International.”

An 18th Award was also given last night - debuting this year, the Lifetime Achievement Award was in recognition of an individual who has made significant and outstanding contributions to the tableware industry in their lifetime.

The winner, David Queensberry, of Queensberry Hunt fame, was unable to attend, and instead his business colleague of 20 years, Robin Levien, received the Award for him. David, who is 89, said of the recognition: “I would like to thank everyone who suggested I receive this award. I feel equally honoured and unworthy of this distinction, but that’s not going to stop me accepting it!”

As for the event, attended by more than 200 industry insiders, Kate says: “We were delighted so many fantastic tabletop companies, retailers and industry experts attended the Tableware International Awards of Excellence 2019. We had a fantastic evening celebrating excellence in tabletop and were honoured to pay tribute to the wonderful companies and people that make this industry what it is.

"We were also delighted that so many of our international judges were able to attend, retailers joining us from as far afield as Canada, the Philippines, Greece and Russia. We would like to thank everyone who supported us in these Awards, from the panel of 26 international judges, to our awards sponsors, and the 148 tabletop companies who entered and supported the awards."

A special thank you goes out to Messe Frankfurt and the Ambiente show, in particular, which hosted the event.

The 18 winners will be featured in our Awards Winners supplement, which will be distributed with the March/April issue of Tableware International.
